Dancers Profile Info

Bio

Walladah learned Oriental-Middle Eastern dance initially in community settings as a traditional dance. Since 2005 she takes formal lessons and workshops and does her own research concerning the dance traditions of the Mediterranean. Walladah has studied in particular Egyptian dance (traditional, classical and modern), Lebanese dance (classical and modern), Turkish dance (modern and ottoman style dance), Romani dances (India, Egypt, Turkey, Balkan peninsula), Bollywood style, American styles (Vintage Cabaret, Fusion Bellydance, Gothic Bellydance) but also Persian dance and Butoh. From January 2020 to October 2022 she has learned Morris dance in Hull, UK. Walladah plays Mediterranean drums: table/dumbek, tambourine and cymbals (sagat, zills) and dances with them if the occasion requires. She is also dancing with veil, cane stick, sword, daggers, fan veils and other props and she loves performing with live music.

Experience

She has many years of dance teaching experience and as a choreographer, she has developed a notation system for Oriental dance. Her adherence to the dance traditions made her to develop teaching methods that can transmit the improvisational character of the dance.
She is also a musician and singer and has been training in both Western and Mediterranean (modal) traditions since childhood. She has published articles with dance magazines and has her own newsletter, Walladah’s Dance Vignettes.
She participates in selected events and festivals and has been a member of various artistic collectives in Greece and in the UK, including a Morris dance troupe.
